Exercise for Seniors
For millions of Australians the so-called Golden Years may become the active years. Research published in 2002 in the American Journal of Epidemiology indicates strongly that retirement can be a time of rejuvenation for older adults.
The researchers discovered that older adults may feel so good about their progress once they start being active that they stick with their programme over time. In the study the participants liked the way the exercise made them feel more energetic, vibrant, independent and strong.
Interestingly in surveying people 50 years and above, older males view their health as their top consideration and older females, a close second to family and friends. Both groups indicated interest in exercising safely.
Despite this up to 50% of this age group are classified sedentary and inactive. The question is why? The answer is Barriers!
What are the Barriers to exercise for the over 50's?
- Not knowing where to go for advice/help
- Not knowing where to start
- Poor local knowledge of appropriate physical activity for this age group by their G.P., especially in the private business sector.
- Poor marketing messages from the fitness industry e.g. pictures of skimpily clad young women or over-muscled young men.
- A perception that "I won't fit in"
- A feeling that "I have arthritis (back pain/shoulder problems) and I can't do exercise"
- Thoughts of "I'm not a gym person!"
How do we break down those barriers at the Green Apple?
