Weight Loss
Millions are spent annually on products and services which promise weight or fat loss.
At the Green Apple we have an effective programme, the Healthy Eating and Active Lifestyle Course which has been achieving outstanding results. The only prerequisite to this course is ... your readiness to shed your fat.
For years my mother-in-law has been trying to get my husband and I to lose weight. She has even been known to resort to the odd pointed Christmas gift of low-fat cookbooks for all the daughters-in-law who were overweight or had chubby hubbies. But to no avail. Not one to be easily discouraged, she finally found the piece de resistance of gifts last Christmas - a gift voucher to the Green Apple.
Now I am one of those people for whom 'exercise' is a dirty word. I had done next to none during the past twenty years or so (which you can get away with when you're young, but by the time you reach the age of forty it starts to get a bit difficult to get out of the lounge chair without a bit of a heave-ho!). That, coupled with sciatic pain in my left hip and leg made me feel like a forty-four year-old in a ninety-year old's body. I had dieted on and off (more off than on!) but was finding that what used to work when I was younger - namely, go on a diet and go for a walk a couple of times a week - didn't work any more. So there I was, happy to at least enjoy my food. (What was the point in dieting if nothing was going to happen?)
I was very apprehensive about going to a gym. I thought 'Sure! This will be great! Old Heffalump puffing and blowing surrounded by all these taut terrific twenty-somethings prancing around in their leotards and g-strings!' As it turned out, nothing could be further from the truth. One of the best things about the Green Apple is that it is a place where ordinary people of any age can come (in their old shorts and t-shirts if they want) to improve their health, and no-one is there to pass judgment on them. Instead there is an atmosphere of friendliness and encouragement, not only from the staff, but amongst many of the members I have met while doing my programme.
After the initial assessment and a taste of the gym programme (it wasn't so bad after all), my husband and I decided 'What the heck! We'll give it a go and see what happens!' I remember thinking to myself 'This had better give results! This is the only gift we've ever received that's cost us money!' I am pleased to report that in the seven months I've been coming to the gym, I have lost over twelve kilograms - and still more to come! The Healthy Eating and Active Lifestyle Course taught me what I needed to be eating to achieve a balanced diet that actually works. Of course, you need to exercise (that dirty word again!) but at least I am getting results and am much fitter. Now I only feel like a forty-four year-old in a sixty year-old's body!
I don't have to crawl out of the lounge chair any more - I just stand up. Not only am I a couple of sizes smaller, you can actually start to see muscles below the remaining layers of fat! "Sexy legs, Ma!" my eldest daughter announced one day. "They're the best they've ever looked!" My mother-in-law is tickled pink (she has finally achieved her goal to get me to exercise) and my husband can't keep his hands off his 'new wife'! What more could a girl want?!!
