Exercise Right for Active Ageing

Exercise Right for Active Ageing

Exercise is so important for seniors, but many don’t do enough. Actually almost 3 out of 4 Aussies aged over 65 don’t get enough exercise. Regular exercise not only helps to reduce your risk of chronic disease, but also helps to keep your bones strong, reduces your risk of falls and helps to maintain independence and quality of life.

What is Exercise Right for Active Ageing?

Exercise Right for Active Ageing is an initiative aimed at making exercise more accessible for seniors over the age of 65. Thanks to funding from the Australian Government, we’re able to deliver discounted exercise classes to seniors at the Green Apple Wellness Centre. Classes are run by Exercise Physiologists. We want everyone to have a chance to move with a focus on fitness, strength, balance and flexibility.

How can the Exercise Right for Active Ageing program help me?

Here are a few ways the program can change your life by bettering your ability to:

  • Play with the grandkids
  • Lift the groceries inside from the car
  • Easily get in and out of the car and have the mental alertness behind the wheel
  • Recover faster when the grandkids give you the flu
  • Enjoy social interactions because no one wants to feel lonely
  • To be able to take care of yourself
  • Keep the house clean
  • Reduce the risk of falls

At the end of the day exercise improves all the small things, which end up being the big things.

What are the exercise sessions with the exercise physiologists like?

We will answer this question with a testimonial from one of our Green Apple’s Stan Solman.

“I joined Green Apple in March 2018 as I was in a lot of pain and my health problems were impacting my daily life. My arthritis was becoming progressively worse and also my breathing was causing distress.

After an initial interview, I was assigned to Exercise Physiologist, Sunny, who tailored a program that met my needs and health issues and arranged for me to join his Lungs in Action group (one of the Supervised Wellness Groups).

Working regularly on my strength, cardio and stretch exercises has improved my mobility, flexibility and breathing. Although I still experience some pain, I know that if I stopped exercising, I would not be capable of playing golf and other activities that I enjoy.

Working with the Wellness group members twice a week is very motivating and we can provide encouragement to each other.

From my initial interview at Green Apple, I have been very impressed with the casual (but professional), caring and friendly atmosphere that the Green Apple provides.” Stan Solman.
