Hi All

Our emailed monthly newsletter will be coming out soon and has an article from Exercise Physiologist Ben on “Exercising in the Heat” which might give you a few ideas on what to do if you suffer from the heat, and also the benefits of exercising in the heat. If you have the medical condition, arthritis, you may find exercise quite uncomfortable in really cold weather but will be able to do any physical activity more easily in the heat.

Sport scientist Team member, Jesse, has also contributed to the E newsletter, and Team member Nessa has provided a great original recipe that looks very yummy. Many members have told me that they thought the monthly newsletter email sent to them was the same one that they collect as a hard copy newsletter in the gym. Not so. Your E newsletter goes out to a much wider audience and will have more information not published in our in-house version.

We have a new Green Apple baby expected next week! Team member Kristen and her wife, Kylie, will welcome their baby into the world on November 14 and all of us on the Green Apple team are so happy for them. Hopefully next week we will be able to share the name of this little person.

The next two newsletters, November 18 and 25th, we will be sharing a very interesting paper about our muscles. The most relevant variables in muscle function are muscle strength and muscle power, and research is suggesting that, as we age, the crucial factor in remaining optimally functional is retention of muscle power. So many of our activities of daily life require us to be able to move against the force of gravity or inertia. Without this capacity we become slower and instead of remaining a “hare” we become a “tortoise”! Even the action of going from a sitting to a standing position can become a creaky version of a young person’s ability to bound up and out of a chair.  It is not leg strength but leg power that enables us to do this and it is something we can retain if we do the right exercises. So read up on this article about Sarcopaenia (or Sarcopenia), the condition of reduced muscle mass which now includes muscle strength in its definition. The article will also explain the concept of “Dynapaenia (or Dynapenia) which better defines the loss of muscle strength and power that often accompanies the ageing process. All interesting and pertinent for so many of us at the Green Apple.

Keep up the good work and stay hydrated!

Cheers,
