The Weekly Bite – Monday 30 September, 2024 —Issue 2586

Hi All

Nessa will have sent out our monthly E-newsletter by now. If you receive this online newsletter do open it and scan through the content. We publish this monthly edition for a wider audience, so it differs from the weekly version. It may have some information that is already in the weekly in-house hard-copy newsletter but it will also contain original copy.

Kristen is the team member who looks after our weekly publication, and she is always interested in sharing members’ stories and using any healthy recipes you may make, cook, bake. I generally write the editorial and do the proof-reading so if you find errors I have either missed something or I haven’t read the final draft!

I worked for many years as a proofreader during my mid-20s in a private firm who did all the typesetting for books being prepared to go off to the printer. There was no such thing as a computer which printed pages as you see them now. In those days we had highly trained male typesetters (who usually trained for several years in their trade in the UK, who thought of themselves as top of the team) who had to type up everything separately, different size headings, the text, any italic and bold text that required cutting up and placing on the page frames by the compositors. I worked from galley after galley of print. And I was the one, the only female in the team, who had to read everything for spelling, formatting, line length, spacing, in fact everything a computer does automatically now but which required a large team of people who worked manually to achieve the end result. They saw me as the dragon who had to find every and any discrepancy at every stage till we reached the end product. These days they have “spell-check”!

As a result of my interest in publishing decades ago, I still love the written word and artwork/photos etc that bring it alive. I am lucky to have someone like Nessa on the Team because she loves to make up booklets as part of her job promoting our services and getting the message out wherever she can. If you participate in our Facebook page, that is Nessa’s baby. If you read any notices around the Green Apple explaining what is going on, that will be Nessa’s effort.

One of the resources we publish inhouse which Nessa has compiled, is what we call our “Doctors’ Pack”. It is a bound, multi-page .colourful book with an index that provides information about all the services we provide. On Wednesdays, Nessa generally spends the day out visiting Medical practices where she speaks to Practice Nurses about our medical services. Nessa keeps them up to date about what we are currently providing so the doctors are able to refer the patients to us who need help with prescribed, tailored exercise and dietary advice for their medical condition.  Nessa explains any relevant dates for any of our pending activities or services eg  the type two diabetes (T2D) Group Education Course which can be bulk billed through Medicare if the patient has T2D and is provided a referral to attend.

Nessa is going to leave a Doctors’ Pack at Reception so you have a chance to look at it, in the hope that if you are happy with the results you are getting by coming to Green Apple and you believe your doctor will be interested, that you will be prepared to take a copy and share it with your doctor sometime.

On another topic, the Summer Group Class schedule will be available to collect from Reception. This commences on October 14 and includes Aqua!

[Note:  Anyone attending Monday at 9am or Thursday 6am needs to know that the class will now be a Video rather than delivered by an instructor].

I have been invited as Guest Speaker to the Albany Creek Probus group by Members Maureen and Arthur Mosely on Thursday October 3. I am looking forward to this because I have always felt Probus provides great support for “thinking people.” I hope they have a lot of good questions for me.

Cheers
