How to Exercise in the Heat

This month we have included some great content from Exercise Physiologist, Ben, and Exercise Scientist, Jesse, with a great recipe from Nessa!
There’s so much talent in our Green Apple Team that is still untapped. They have so much to share! So I would love to hear about what you would like to read and the topics you would like explored. We are up for anything that you have a special interest in as long as it is within our scope to answer!

On a personal note, I do my best to stay as hydrated as possible and to dissipate heat as much as I can during my exercise sessions. Some of my exercise is more targeted on body maintenance rather than high energy calorie burn-up, but on the days that I plan to elevate my heart rate significantly and work into an anaerobic zone rather than staying within my aerobic capacity, I have plenty of fluids to drink prior to the exercise session and I wear clothes that will allow the perspiration/sweat pouring out of my body to dry well and keep me cool.

There are many materials on the market these days which are designed to wick the moisture away from your body so it can dry more efficiently rather than saturating your skin and clothes. In high humidity, this saturation can only hinder heat dissipation.

I recommend you read Ben’s article, Exercising in the Heat, and plan how you can best avoid dehydration, faintness and succumbing to the climbing temperatures that will be with us for a few months now.

And if all else fails, organise to have your exercise transferred into the pool for those very hot days. You can make an appointment with one of the Exercise Physiologists to have them design a program in the water that is tailored to your needs and what you like to do.

If you are eligible for a Private Health rebate, you will be able to claim this onsite through HiCaps. If you are a Club Member at Green Apple you will also have your program plan session at a significantly reduced fee. Don’t hold back, treat yourself to what your body needs, and Just Do It!
