The Weekly Bite – Monday 17 February, 2025 —Issue 2604

Hi All

I have wonderful news for you if you love the water!

STOP PRESS:  If you enjoy exercising in the pool, or if you understand the value of exercising in the water in relation to rehab and/or how the water can help with general mobility as we age, then you will find this very important exciting news!

OUR POOL CLASSES, INDIVIDUAL HYDROTHERAPY SESSIONS AND (new activity) ADULT SWIMMING LESSONS WILL NOW BE AVAILABLE ALL YEAR ROUND.

After deliberating for months on the quotes I gathered in 2024, to purchase an all-year Pool Pump Heater to complement our existing Solar Blanket and also to install a significant amount of Solar Panels to generate a large increase in electricity, I came back from our two weeks break and made the decision to go ahead with the financial outlay.  This has been challenging, however after talking to many members I realised that we are so lucky to have both the wonderful gym environment to exercise in, we also have so much to offer in the way of exercise in the buoyancy of water.

We really need to increase our water class options

  1. to accommodate the huge interest members are showing in Aquarobics, as well as
  2. to offer a much expanded program in rehab, exercise for arthritic joints, hydrotherapy for knee and hip pain, increased shoulder range of motion etc etc
  3. to offer adult swim lessons
  4. to use the pool all year for Water Walking

This last area, Water Walking, may be a new concept to many of you however it is very helpful for people I am treating who need to reduce swelling and odoema. The compression factor of water while you move plus the activity within your body to generate movement provides a “draining” response.

I am not a “water-lover” myself and prefer exercising on land but I certainly used the pool throughout my recovery from bilateral knee replacements, major shoulder surgery, spinal fusion, and any other time I needed to have support to move my body around in space. It was amazing what I could achieve in the water: my knees could bend better, I could walk without limping, and the biggest benefit was the way I could lift my arm in multiple directions in a way that I couldn’t achieve in the shoulder joint out of water, where gravity worked against me.

I am also keen to provide Adult swimming lessons now that I know we still have so many people who are not comfortable in the water and also many who never really learnt to swim as a youngster. Josie, our newest Exercise Physiologist, is an accredited and qualified Swim Teacher and she is already helping me create our first draft of expanded water options. With the help from the Green Apple Team I am really excited about what we will be able to offer our members this year.

Cheers
