Hi Everyone
On the back of the newsletter this week there are a couple of interesting articles which Kristen has sourced for your enjoyment and information. Kristen does a wonderful job searching for articles which support our health and exercise journey and one of them is about Bone health. I think most of us exercising at Green Apple understand the need to do resistance (strength) training exercise to maintain Bones and Muscles.
Loading our body as we age makes the difference between staying vital (and as functional as possible) and the alternative, sitting and lying around too much because we cannot do the things in life we once used to do.
The other article is about Falls. Falls become more common as we age and there are many reasons for this. There’s so much we can do to help reduce the possibility of having a fall, for example maintaining our strength, our reaction times, our mobility and agility, lift our feet when we walk rather than shuffling, maintain our balance and reaction times as much as possible, as well as do an audit of fall-threats in our living environments (house and garden).
Once we have a fall, being able to cope with it and get up from wherever we’ve fallen is the challenge. Many moons ago Ben, with the support of other exercise physiologists, delivered a session on “How to get up from a Fall”. This was delivered during the 6am class upstairs one Friday morning.
We are planning to provide another demonstration and it has been as a response from a request by member, Denise Cohen-Cramp. Denise writes,
Last year’s Seniors’ Magazine Letter to the editor regards Falls (August/September 2024) ‘TO STAND NEEDS A HAND’ alerted me to ask if Green Apple attendees could be shown how to recover to an upright position. Rather than an actual course, could we be given a demonstration please.”
Thank you for being pro-active Denise. Keep an eye on the Noticeboard and the Newsletter for more news about this.
Cheers
